bio and cv

Liza McCosh’s art practice is inspired by nature and the elements of water, air, fire and earth that are emphasized in the South-West Victorian landscape where she lives; rugged coastlines, dramatic skyscapes and volcanic topography abound in this region. This location also intrigued earlier painters of the sublime, such as Eugene von Guerard. McCosh’s response differs; while interested in literal landscape sites she responds to narratives that the site stimulates. She is constantly aware of natural and unnatural processes occurring in the environment over a period of time; a process of transmutation that continues to shape the land.
Aligning with her interest in environmental issues she often employs painting methods that emphasise the autonomy of matter in the creative process, as expounded in her PhD thesis titled The Sublime: Process and Mediation (2003). She is intrigued by the transmutative aspect of the painting process and the revealing that occurs through the interaction of matter suggesting new forms of creativity to the artist. The generative quality of the painting materials mimics the generative quality of nature; both have the capacity to create new material form and to generate new ideas and enquiry.
McCosh is a retired as a Senior Lecturer of Deakin University, where she worked largely as Team Leader in the Visual Arts Department at the Institute of Koorie Education. She also founded and continues to be Director of SCOPE Galleries Warrnambool, a contemporary art gallery where she implemented a national biennial art award, Art Concerning Environment. Her professional practice has included in excess of twenty-three solo exhibitions and numerous pre-selected national award exhibitions. She has been the recipient of several awards, grants and residencies, which include an Arts Victoria Grant from the International Cultural Exchange Program (2001, United Kingdom), a Deakin University Research Travel Grant (2001, New York) and an Arts Victoria Research and Development Grant (1997). She has also presented at arts based conferences in Melbourne and Berlin. Her artwork is held in the collections of Artbank, Bundanon Trust, Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery, Gippsland Art Gallery, Warrnambool Art Gallery, Deakin University Art Collection and the Epworth Art Collection. McCosh has a studio in Warrnambool where she resides and continues to operate SCOPE Galleries where her work can be viewed http://www.scopegalleries.com
